Create or Update Customer Records with the Commerce7 Customer Importer
The Customer Importer tool is an efficient solution for creating or updating customer records in bulk. Please be aware that currently, the tool does not support the import of custom fields or street addresses.- Go to CRM > Customers.
- Under Actions, choose Import Customers.
- Click the 'Download a Sample File' link and fill it out according to the template.
- Do not edit or add any column headings.
- Birthdate must be in YYYY-MM-DD format (you may need to change the format manually based on your version of Excel. If you need guidance on how to do this, take a look at the article here).
- You can use this template to upload new customer records and/or overwrite existing customer records.
- Once it's filled out, save as a CSV file.
- Click the Upload CSV file link. Once uploaded, you will see the file name populate.

- When using the 'Overwrite customers if email already exists' option, the following will occur:
- If the email address already exists in the system: Any data you enter will be added to the current customer record.
- If data already exists in any fields: The data will be overwritten with the information in the template.
- If there are email addresses in the Email 2 and Email 3 fields on the customer record that you want to retain: you will need to enter these manually into the upload template. Otherwise they will be deleted.
- When using the 'Overwrite customers if email already exists' option, the following will occur:
- When using the 'Tag imported customers' option, the following will occur:
- You will have the option to select an existing tag, or create a new one.
- Tags will be applied only to successfully imported records.
- Finally, click the Upload File button.
- If the file passes our basic validation, the import will begin.
- If we can detect something wrong with the file, you will see an error right away and they can review and re-upload the file.
- While it's processing, you'll see the following screen. Feel free to navigate away from this screen - and you'll receive an email once complete.
- When the import is complete, you will receive an email stating the number of successful imports or any that failed.
